The Crisis of the Naval War This history of the Royal Navy from 1917 to 1918 was written by its First Sea Lord, Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe. It is a detailed analysis of the Royal Navy’s strategic, tactical, and logistical problems during the final two years of the First World War from the point-of-view of a professional naval officer at the highest level of the Admiralty. It follows his previous history of the operations of the British Grand Fleet which he commanded from 1914 to 1916. The crisis of the Naval war was also the greatest crisis Britain had yet to face, as the German Imperial Navy began to keep its High Sea Fleet mostly in port after the Battle of Jutland, and stepped up its extremely effective U-boat campaign against Allied shipping in the Atlantic and elsewhere. Admiral Jellicoe’s narrative begins when he was promoted to the Admiralty as First Sea Lord. He describes the organization, technology, strategy and tactics adopted by the Admiralty as it struggled with the realities of unrestricted submarine warfare such as had never before been conducted or imagined. It was the advent of modern naval warfare and Admiral Jellico was there. Included in this edition are the appendices, charts, diagrams, and photographs left out of many other reprints of the original edition.

This is a review of the free Kindle edition. To get it out of the way, this is NOT about Jutland. This is Jellicoe's writing about the submarine problem in 1917 and 1918. It's interesting how he didn't buy into the convoy system, as he was more worried about mines. Remarkable to me.The writing style is very dry, as you might expect. The highlight is the stories of the decoy ships. Amazing acts of bravery by the crews.
Also interesting is how little Jellicoe thought of the German sub crews. He states that England would have been taken down in a month or two if they had been facing English sailors in the subs.

Undoubtedly one of the Great Naval heroes of the 20th century, who had a great deal of influence in Naval matters.A younger Jellicoe also served in the second world war,with some distinction, and helped establish the SBS and raiding forces for the navy.. This book is useful as an historical source but as a narrative it only has limited use; jellicoe tried to influence Britain s Naval development and make improvements.However, the same problems arise.because of budget restrictions then( and now..encounters in control ) ,REAL changes were never made.WE In the UK,still do not have enough Ships,support craft,Torpedo boats, functional ancillary vessels,Naval aircraft or underscores,let alone enough good seamen.
Is a pity, but seems that we tend to repeat our mistakes again and again. As a former army man, I am always surprised of the way we do not read, as we are suposed to do, our military history books.
